howard winfield

A native of Montreal, Canada, Dr. Winfield came to Alabama from the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, where he served as a Professor in the Department of Urology and Director of Laparoscopic, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery. Dr. Winfield joined West Alabama Urology Associates in the summer of 2009.  He is the father of four children.

Experience

Dr. Winfield has been a practicing urologist for 25 years. Dr. Winfield has extensive experience with minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. In fact, Dr. Winfield was the first person in the world to perform laparoscopic surgery to remove a cancerous portion of a kidney. One of the first surgeons in the country to use the da Vinci® Surgical platform, Dr. Winfield has trained many surgeons from around the world on the da Vinci Surgical platform. He has written and edited scores of scholarly papers on urology and minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Winfield was the first person in the world to perform laparoscopic surgery to remove a diseased portion of a kidney.

Education

Dr. Winfield received his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. After completing his urology residency in 1984 he completed a two-year fellowship in endourology at Washington University in St. Louis, UCLA and University of Minnesota.
